THE JANUARY MEETING OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS FOR THE NEW MEXICO HORSEMEN'S ASSOCATION WILL BE HELD, STARTING AT 9:00 AM AT THE HORSMEN'S MAIN OFFICE IN ALBUQUERQUE, NM WHICH IS LOCATED AT 217 PALOMAS, NE, ALBUQUERQUE, NE.  87108.  FOR DIRECTIONS PLEASE CALL 505.266.7056. THE MAIN OFFICE IS CONVENIENTLY  LOCATED APPROXIMATELY 7 BLOCKS WEST OF THE NEW MEXICO STATE FAIR GROUNDS. THE PROPOSED AGENDA WILL INCLUDE DISCUSSION OF RECENT VOTING BY INTERNET FOR SUNLAND PARK TRACK COMMITTEE,  US DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION RULES GOVERNING DOWN TIME RECORDS FOR COMMERCIAL CARRIERS OF LIVESTOCK AND AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS (INCLUDING HORSES),  CDL REQUIREMENTS FOR HORSE HAULING,  THE POSSIBILITY FOR SPORTS BETTING AT RACETRACKS AND THE RECENTLY COMPLETED NMHA SPONSORED ECONOMIC IMPACT STUDY WILL BE DISCUSSED AMONG OTHER ITEMS OF INTEREST TO HORSEMEN.

REGARDING THE ECONOMIC IMPACT STUDY ON OUR INDUSTRY THAT WAS RECENTLY COMPLETED THE FOLLOWING WAS OBSERVED:  RACING REMAINS A VIBRANT AND IMPORTANT PORT OF THE ECONOMY OF NEW MEXICO.  IN 2016, THE INDUSTRY AS A WHOLE CONTRIBUTED $549 MILLION TO THE NEW MEXICO ECONOMY AND SUPPORTED MORE THAN 8,000 JOBS.  THESE NUMBERS WHILE IMPRESSIVE ALSO POINTED TO STAGNATION OF OUR  INDUSTRY IN NEW MEXICO WHICH HAS CONTRACTED ABOUT 24% SINCE 2006.  THIS CONTRACTION OF THE INDUSTRY IN NEW MEXICO IS IN LINE WITH NATIONAL FIGURES AND IS DUE TO A NUMBER OF FACTORS INCLUDING THE RECENT NATION WIDE-RECESSION AMONG OTHER FACTORS.   WHILE RACING REMAINS VIABLE, IT IS CLEAR THAT WE MUST ATTRACT MORE FANS AND OWNERS TO RACING.   THE STUDY CAN BE VIEWED AS  BOTH A POSITIVE AND A WARNING AT THE SAME TIME.  OUR INDUSTRY IS GRAYING AND BECOMING INCREASINGLY REGIONALIZED AND CONCENTRATED IN TERMS OF HORSE OWNERSHIP AND TRAINING.

THERE IS HOPE THAT THE RECENTLY ENACTED TAX BILL WILL BOOST OWNERSHIP OF RACE HORSES.  THE BILL WHICH CONTAINS PROVISIONS FOR  ACCELERATED DEPRECIATION OF NEWLY PURCHASED HORSES AND RELATED EQUIPMENT SHOULD HELP STABLES THAT RACE HORSES.   GENEROUS DEDUCTIONS AVAILABLE TO THE SMALL BUSINESS ENTITIES AND THE SELF EMPLOYED  SHOULD PROVIDE A STIMULUS TO THE INDUSTRY AS WELL.   CONSULT YOUR TAX PROFESSIONAL FOR ADVISE REGARDING THESE CHANGES TO THE TAX CODE.

THE NMHA IS LOOKING AT MEANS TO ATTRACT NEW FANS TO OUR SPORT.   WE ARE LOOKING FOR WAYS TO MAKE RACING MORE ACCESSIBLE AND ATTRACTIVE TO PROSPECTIVE OWNERS AND FANS.  WE MAKE UP  AN INDUSTRY AND MUST CONTINUALLY BE IN COMMUNICATION WITH THE HORSEMEN, HORSE BREEDERS, RACING COMMISSION AND THE RACE TRACKS IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE RESULTS.  YOUR INPUT IS MUCH APPRECIATED.  SEND US AN EMAIL TO NMHASTATE1@AOL.COM WITH YOUR IDEAS.

MAKE PLANS AND ATTEND THE NMHA BOARD MEETING ON THE 17TH OF JANUARY, 2018 WHICH STARTS AT 9:00 AM.

THE NEW MEXICO RACING COMMISSION WILL HOLD ITS JANUARY, 2018 PUBLIC MEETING AT THE DOWNS AT ALBUQUERQUE'S VIP ROOM. THIS MEETING WILL START AT 9:30 AM.  HORSEMEN ARE ALWAYS INVITED TO ATTEND ALL MEETINGS OF THE RACING COMMISSION. PLEASE MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD.
